Tips for Your Fundraising Booklet Printing Project

While booklets and souvenir booklets can be bound with any of our four binding styles, they are typically thought of as saddle-stitched booklets. Thus, our tips will address saddle-stitched booklets:

  • With saddle stitching, the booklet has to be printed in increments of four pages, with a maximum of 80 pages. A large sheet of paper is printed with two pages on the front and two pages on the back. It is then folded in half, assembled with the other pages in the booklet, and stapled in the spine to hold the book together. Thus, each sheet of paper has four pages on it. If you end up with a final number of pages that is not in increments of four pages, you have a couple of options.
You can add a blank page to the inside front cover and/or inside back cover. Often, you will need to be cognizant of this as you are designing, since it may shift the way spreads look in your booklet. You can also add advertisements or other information to the back of the booklet on the blank pages. Your final option is to select another binding style. However, keep in mind that the other three binding styles must be in increments of two pages, since each sheet of paper will have printing on the front and back.
  • Be careful of putting text or graphics across two pages as a spread. There are two places in the booklet where you can do this with no problems — across the middle two pages of the booklet or across the outside front and back covers. These are the only two places in the booklet where the spreads are printed on one sheet of paper next to each other. Everywhere else in the booklet, the spread is printed on two sheets of paper.
Never put a word, and especially one letter, on two pages. It is very difficult to line those up perfectly. Also, don’t put someone’s face on two pages. If the printing shifts even a little, it will very noticeable that the person’s face does not look right. Offset the face onto either the left- or right-hand side of the page.
  • Keep all critical text and graphics at least 1/2 inch from the edge of the page. First, your layout will look much more professional if you keep large margins on your page. Too much text on a page is offputting to a reader. But more importantly, if the text is too close to the edge of the page, there is a chance that some of it can get cut off when the booklet is trimmed.
  • Choose your paper stocks carefully. If you choose heavy paper stocks with a large number of pages, the booklet can get very bulky looking. Typically, the more pages in the booklet, the lighter the paper stock you want to use. Our general guidelines with saddle stitch binding would be to use 100# text from 8 to 32 pages, 80# text from 36 to 60 pages, and 70# text from 64 to 80 pages. If you are unsure of what cover stock to pair with text stock, our general guideline is to use 80# cover stock with 70# and 80# text stock and 100# cover stock with 100# text stock. If you are unsure of what paper stock to select for your booklet, send for our free sample package.
We will send you samples of our four binding styles — saddle stitch, perfect bound, plastic coil, and wire-o. The plastic coil book has samples of all of our paper stocks. Our clients find this very helpful when making decisions about their printing projects.
  • Before submitting your booklet for printing, have a few people look it over. Sometimes you are so close to the project that you won’t see obvious issues or typographical errors. Make sure you have these individuals look at the booklet in spreads, so that they can see what pages are next to each other.
This can help them see if it makes more sense to have other pages next to each other. Or you may have added page to the booklet, which has shifted which pages will appear next to each other.
