9 Nonfiction Writing Tips

Nonfiction books are a large part of the publishing world. If you’re determined to write your own, follow these nonfiction writing tips to produce a book that informs and inspires your readers.

What Is a Nonfiction Book?

A nonfiction book tells a true story. It can be yours or someone else’s, but it must be based on reality. There are many books that fall into the nonfiction category, including:

  • Personal or family memoir
  • History
  • Biography
  • Business
  • How-to
  • Self-help
  • Travel guide
  • Political topic
  • Social issues
  • Science

If you have some information you want to share or a true story to tell, you can write a nonfiction book using these nonfiction writing tips.

1. Answer Your “Why”

Why are you writing your book? That’s the main question you must answer before you can begin writing. Most nonfiction writers are responding to a need their audience has. People buy nonfiction books to learn something new or to get the “secret information” from an insider. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the world longing to hear your story about a famous historical event?
  • Are you a celebrity or a leader in your industry?
  • Do you have proven expertise at doing something?
  • Can you explain complex things in a clear manner?
  • Does your family want a record of its history?

Answering this “why” will help you frame the approach of your book. Focus on your reason for writing it. This will help you avoid adding extraneous information or veering off on unrelated tangents.

2. Choose the Word Length

Nonfiction is a broad category, so the length depends on the type of book you’re writing. Biographies and histories may be longer, and self-help and how-to books are usually shorter.

Most nonfiction books are about 40,000 words. That’s about 80 single-spaced pages or 160 double-spaced pages.

It’s an old but true saying that “What gets written down gets done.” When it comes to writing, a scheduled time is the best way to make sure you get the writing done. Determine how many hours a day you can carve out of your schedule. Even if you can only manage a half hour, start with that. Some writers set a daily word count. Writing 500 words a day is manageable for most people, even those with a packed schedule.   • Traditional three-act format: In this format, you tell a story from the beginning, through the middle, and to the end. You set the scene, introduce the main characters, and describe the event or events that propel the story forward. The bulk of the book details the main character’s obstacles, and the resolution shows how the character met those challenges. This storytelling structure is good for histories, biographies, and memoirs.
  • Circular story: This is a story that begins with the major event. It then goes back to the beginning and the middle to describe what led to this major event. This format works well if the main event is something readers will find interesting and want to read about first.
  • Parallel structure: A parallel structure tells two stories at the same time. Each has its own beginning, middle, and end. The stories must tie together at the end.
  • Numbered plan: If you’re writing an instruction book, it must involve a series of steps or “secrets” you are sharing with the reader. Develop a way to summarize your steps that uses a number, for instance, “the six-step plan to increasing mindfulness” or “12 weeks to total fitness.” If you look at popular how-to, motivational, and self-help books, you’ll notice that they all use a plan presented as a numbered series of steps or time units. Keep it simple. Let your readers know they’ll save time getting to their goal with your help.

5. Do the Research

Another great nonfiction writing tip is to do great research. Research is the foundation of a good nonfiction book. You can’t present yourself as an expert unless you’ve grounded your book in the evidence. Don’t rely on internet searches. Make a wide search for a variety of sources that deepen your understanding.

  • Case studies: Use scientific and sociological studies that underlie your point. If you’re writing about a scientific, industrial, or political issue, it’s probably on a topic you already know a lot about. You likely know where to research the latest news and developments in this field. Use that research as a starting point. Branch out to consider opposing viewpoints you can challenge in your book. Show why your viewpoint is the right one because it’s based on the evidence.
  • Journals: Scientific and historical journals are excellent sources for any book that deals with health, science, politics, or social issues.
  • Books: Books about the history of your topic are invaluable. If you’re writing about events in the past, they may be the only way to find out what people thought of those events in the past.
  • Interviews: Do you know anyone who used your six-week plan for total organization and succeeded? Do any of your contacts know someone who lived through the historical period you’re writing about? Interviews with people can bring your dry nonfiction facts to life. Use before-and-after pictures, and include information about how your plan transformed their lives. Get viewpoints on historical or current events from historians, sociologists, psychologists, doctors, and others who have studied the issue in depth.

6. Choose the Main Points

All that research can lead to a mountain of facts, interview notes, and other information. How are you supposed to cram it all in?

You’re not. Your job now is to select the main points you want to emphasize in your book. This can be one of the most difficult, time-consuming parts of planning your book. You may find some things so interesting that you feel you must include them, even if they’re not directly related to the main point of your book.

Don’t give in to the temptation to include everything. Some writers say their research uncovers enough information to write more than one book. If that’s the case, count yourself lucky, but leave all the extraneous stuff for your second book. Right now, you must sift through the studies, notes, and interviews to find only the true golden nuggets.

7. Open Strong

A nonfiction book must grab the readers from the first page. When you write a fiction book, readers are intrigued by the plot. They want to know what happens next. With nonfiction, you must immediately persuade readers that you’re an authoritative source of information.

One of the best nonfiction writing tips is to open with an introduction that explains:

  • Why readers need the book
  • Why you’re the best person to write it
  • What they will learn from it
  • How it will change their life, move them, or give them a new perspective

8. Start Writing
