Creative Calendar Ideas

Looking for creative ideas for your calendar? Consider some of these options:

  • For a family calendar, mark birthdays with a picture of the person on their birthday. Highlight your child’s artwork each month. Or showcase travel pics from your vacations.
  • For a school calendar, give each class a certain month and let them decorate the calendar as they please. Or select a theme and have students submit artwork. Select the best pictures for the calendar.
  • For an office calendar, show employees from different departments for every month. Have a really small office? Highlight one employee a month wearing a silly hat or costume.
  • Make a calendar displaying your company’s history or fun facts about your industry that can be distributed to clients.
  • Every year, select a different theme for the pictures in the calendar. One year could be pets, another year cars, the year after that buildings.

At Publishing Xpress, our minimum print quantity is only 25 copies, so why not try 2 or 3 different options for your calendars.

Tips for Outstanding Calendar Printing

Before you submit your calendar for printing, consider these tips to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with the final product:

Choose a Binding Style

Decide on a binding style. For calendars, you can select plastic coil, saddle stitch, or wire-o. (We suppose you could select perfect bound, but we’ve never seen a wall calendar that is perfect bound!) All three of these binding styles are good options for calendars. Which binding style you select will depend on your personal preferences, including what look you are most attracted to.

Consider Hole Drilling

If the calendar will be hung on a wall, don’t forget to select 1 hole drilling when ordering. We will drill a hole in each calendar so it can be hung with a nail in the wall. But make sure that you take this into account when designing your calendar. You don’t want the hole to drill through critical text or graphics. The hole will be drilled in the center of the calendar about 1/4 inch from the edge of the page.

Select Your Cover Paper Stock

Use a heavy cover stock on the cover. We would recommend 120# cover stock for plastic coil or wire-o and 100# cover stock for saddle stitch. The calendar needs to last for at least a year, so you want to make it as durable as possible. You also want to use a heavy text stock for the inside pages. Our heaviest text weight paper is 100# text stock. If you’d like to see our paper options, order our free sample package. It includes samples of all four of our binding styles. And the plastic coil book includes samples of all of our paper stocks and examples of gloss and soft-touch lamination. Our clients find the sample package very helpful when making printing decisions.

Select Paper for Inside Pages

Consider uncoated or matte paper stocks if users will be writing in the calendar. Gloss text stock tends to smear when written on. If you want to test the paper before printing, our sample book has samples of each paper that is blank on the back. You can use it to test different pens and whether the ink smears.

Check Your Margins

When designing your calendar, make sure to leave a large margin around the calendar itself. If the calendar is too close to the edge of the page, there is a chance that some of the numbers or words could get cut off.

Decide on a Starting Date

Missed the beginning of the year, but still want to print a calendar? No one says you HAVE to start on January 1 with a calendar. If you’ve missed January 1, maybe consider April 1, July 1, or October 1, since those are the starts of new quarters. Or be different — start at the beginning of any month!
